A few months after the US launch, iTunes Match has arrived in the UK. Part of the iCloud suite of web based services, iTunes Match enables users to replicate all music held on their own machines with the versions on the Apple servers. Local versions are checked against the database of songs and replaced with a higher bit-rate versions where necessary.

The service costs £21.99 per year and allows up to 25,000 songs to be synched between 5 iOS devices.

Apple have released the iOS 5.0.1 system for iOS devices. This update addresses poor battery life and includes some other minor improvements; original iPad users will now be able to utilise the multi-touch gestures, resolves glitches with Documents in the Cloud and improves some language recognition features.

iOS 5.0.1 is the first update that users can install without having to connect to iTunes. The ‘Over the Air’ update can be installed by going to “Settings”, then “General”, and then “Software Update”.

It is recommended that your device is connected to a power source during the process, which should complete in approximately ten minutes and it must be on a WiFi connection.

Apple will today release the iOS5 software for all iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPads, two days before the launch of the new iPhone4S handset.

This software update introduces new features such as; updating your device wirelessly, iMessage (a form of messaging similar to Blackberry’s BBM), Twitter integration, a new Notification system, iCloud (a free, updated version of the previous MobileMe) as well as various improvements to existing apps such as Mail, Safari and the Camera.

The new voice-controlled system Siri, is unavailable in this update and will only be a feature on the new iPhone4S handsets.

iOS5 is available from within iTunes when your device is connected (‘Check for Update’ button if not prompted automatically).

To fix the issue, click the Update option within Security Essentials and update to the 1.113.815.0 version. Once complete you can go to Google to re-install Chrome.

Check that you are ready for Lion now.

Apple’s latest software release, OS Lion, will be arriving this month.

New features include multi-touch gestures, full-screen applications, ‘Mission Control’, ‘Launchpad’, Auto-saving, Versions, Disk Encryption, AirDrop and many more.

To be fully prepared for the upgrade here are a few things to note:

• OS Lion will only be available as a download from the Apple App Store, no boxed discs will be available.
• You must be running Snow Leopard 10.6 to upgrade. Users with OS Leopard or OS Tiger can still purchase the Snow Leopard discs prior to Lion upgrades.
• Your computer must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon CPU. You can verify this by clicking on “About This Mac” in your Apple menu and checking the “Processor”.

• You should also check that you have a recommended minimum of 2GB of RAM in the “Memory” section.
• Check for updates on your existing setup and update to Mac OS X 10.6.8
• Verify that your Apple ID is linked to your App Store login. In order to download the OS Lion files, you will need to purchase the upgrade through your App Store. UK pricing is set at £20.99. You can also install on other machines once downloaded that use the same Apple ID.
• Back up your computer before installing the OS Lion upgrade. We recommend using the built-in Time Machine software and also a full disk copy of your installation.
• OS Snow Leopard used a system called Rosetta, an application allowing your machine to run legacy software from the Power-PC era. This support has been dropped in OS Lion, so applications such as Microsoft Office 2004 will not run. You can check if you have any of these type of applications that may affect you by opening the System Profiler (Go to “About This Mac”, then click the “More info” option) and checking for any applications noted as Power-PC.

Don’t panic if you find that your Dropbox docuements are not synching today, the ISP that Dropbox uses are doing some routine maintenance.

Dropbox say “Our hosting provider, has scheduled downtime this Thursday (June 16) so that they can do networking upgrades. They’ve scheduled the downtime from 10pm to 3am PDT. The window here covers a vast section of their network and we won’t be down for the entire event, but it’s possible that we’ll have some connection issues within this window.”

All documents will remain available on your local devices during this downtime and any changes you make will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers after this maintenance is complete.
